Titanium has low density and high specific strength, its electrical and thermal conductivity are similar
to stainless steel, and its corrosion resistance is very excellent, its passivability exceeds that of
aluminum, nickel and stainless steel, and it has the characteristics of low passivation potential,
small critical passivation current, wide passivation potential and high passivation stability, so titanium
is also one of the main choice materials for PEMFC bipolar plates. As with stainless steel, the
passivation film on the surface of titanium will cause the titanium bipolar plate to have a high
contact resistance. Park et al. [54] compared the performance of Ti alloy, 316L and 410 stainless steel
as bipolar plates of direct methanol fuel cells. In 0.001mol/ L H, SO,+2mg/ L F medium, the corrosion
current densities of Ti alloy, 316L and 410 stainless steel are 3.39x10" A /cm2, 2.49x10" A /cm2 and
3.28x10' A /cm2, respectively, as shown in Figure 2-43. However, the test results of the battery pack
(Figure 2-44) show that the battery with STS410 stainless steel as a bipolar plate has the best
performance, with a power of 106mW/cm2, the battery with 316L stainless steel as a bipolar plate
has a power of 93mW/cm2, and the battery with Ti as a bipolar plate has a maximum power of only
62mW/cm2. Although the passivation film on the surface of Ti significantly improves the corrosion
resistance of Ti metal, due to the fact that the passivation film on the surface of Ti is an electronic
insulator, the battery with Ti as a bipolar plate has a high resistance (112mΩ/cm2), which significantly
degrades the battery performance.
